Canal+ has acquired all the broadcasting rights for men's European club competitions in sub-Saharan Africa. From mid-2027 until 2031, the group will offer the Champions League and the Europa League on its various channels, in all languages available in its markets.
This acquisition represents a major strategic move for Canal+, given the considerable audience European football attracts on the continent. The presence of numerous African stars in the major clubs competing in the Champions League further enhances the commercial appeal of these competitions.
Canal+ consolidates its African empire
The agreement comes after the acquisition of MultiChoice, the leading pay-TV operator in English-speaking Africa. Canal+ is thus strengthening its coverage of the continent and gaining a significant advantage over several competitors, including New World TV, which has become a major player in the acquisition of sports rights in recent years.
The contract amount has not been disclosed, but it could reach several hundred million euros. With some 40 million subscribers spread across more than 70 countries, Canal+ is counting on subscriptions and advertising revenue to recoup this investment and further establish itself as the leading broadcaster of football in sub-Saharan Africa.
