The animal rights organization L214 has filed a complaint against La Catalane d'abattage, the Perpignan slaughterhouse, for acts of cruelty, serious abuse, and mistreatment. Following a report, its investigators collected footage between May and July showing, among other things, animals being butchered while apparently still conscious, cows having their throats cut without stunning, and pigs being beaten.
According to the complaint, the animals panic, try to escape, are beaten, and sometimes show signs of consciousness after being bled. L214 also denounces inadequate facilities that do not allow the animals to be properly restrained. Some manage to escape the restraints before being bled on the ground in conditions described as "chaotic."
An inspection ordered by the prefect
Following a complaint filed by the association, the prefect of Pyrénées-Orientales ordered a full and immediate inspection of the facility by the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection. Given the seriousness of the allegations, the slaughterhouse management also announced the precautionary suspension of the employees directly implicated. The company, contacted by AFP, had not yet responded.
For L214, these initial decisions remain insufficient. Its director of investigations, Sébastien Arsac, is calling for the closure of this slaughterhouse, built in 2015 and holding Ecocert organic certification. The organization believes that management must guarantee the training of its employees and compliance with European regulations requiring that animals be spared any avoidable suffering during slaughter.
