Doubs: Aspas opposes the plan to cull 330 chamois and demands an end to recreational hunting

The Association for the Protection of Wild Animals (Aspas) has reacted strongly to the draft decree from the Doubs prefecture proposing to authorize the culling of 330 chamois during the next hunting season, which will run from September 2026 to January 2027. In a press release published on July 11, the departmental delegation of the association believes that this measure constitutes an attack on biodiversity and calls for its abandonment.

The association points out that the prefect has the authority to set chamois culling quotas, in accordance with the Environmental Code. However, it believes the project serves neither the public interest nor the imperatives of wildlife protection. ASPAS also disputes the arguments related to agricultural and forestry damage, which it considers insufficient to justify such a high level of culling.

The association is calling for an end to recreational hunting.

Beyond the issue of chamois, the ASPAS (Association for the Protection of Wild Animals) is calling for a suspension of recreational hunting in the department. Specifically, it is demanding a halt to the chamois hunt scheduled between September 2026 and January 2027, as well as an end to the summer roe deer hunt. The association points out that 1.050 roe deer can be taken during this summer period, out of a total of 4.600 authorized until the end of January 2027.

Believing that these practices are occurring during a heatwave and the breeding season for several species, the ASPAS (Association for the Protection of Wild Animals) is calling on public authorities to prioritize the preservation of biodiversity. It is asking the Prefect of Doubs to abandon these culls and make nature conservation a priority, considering that natural areas must be preserved as havens for wildlife.
