A fire that broke out overnight Thursday to Friday at a girls' secondary school in Kenya killed at least 15 students, according to local police.
A fire ravaged a dormitory at the Utumishi Girls' Academy, located in the town of Gilgil, Nakuru County, in the Rift Valley. Authorities reported that an undetermined number of students were also injured.
According to a report from the Gilgil police station seen by Reuters, the cause of the fire is still unknown. Emergency services and law enforcement were still deployed at the scene to search for possible survivors and secure the area.
Images broadcast by local media show broken windows, walls blackened by smoke, and significant damage inside the building.
Fires in schools remain a recurring problem in Kenya. The country has already experienced numerous cases of arson in boarding schools, sometimes linked to student protests against living conditions or discipline.
The authorities have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy and to identify any potential responsibilities.
