Australia announced on Thursday the extension of the quarantine imposed on repatriated passengers from a luxury cruise ship flying the Dutch flag that was affected by a hantavirus outbreak.
Australian Health Minister Mark Butler indicated that the isolation period would be extended to a total of 42 days, until June 23, in accordance with recommendations from health authorities.
Four Australian citizens, a permanent resident and a New Zealand national are currently confined to a quarantine facility near Perth, Western Australia, since returning on May 15 after staying on board the MV Hondius ship.
The passengers were initially supposed to remain isolated until June 5, but authorities decided to extend the measure as a precaution against the risks associated with hantavirus.
"The passengers have been informed of the government's recommendations and decision. I am happy to say that they are doing well," said Mark Butler.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious viral disease, usually transmitted to humans by infected rodents or through contact with their excrement and secretions.
