Powerful explosions rocked an oil refinery in Moscow on Thursday following an attack by Ukrainian drones, according to images circulating on social media and reports from local authorities. The targeted facility is located inside the ring road of the Russian capital, just a few kilometers from the Kremlin.
The attack reportedly caused a fire and significant damage to the industrial site. Witnesses described a particularly violent blast, to the point that the massive lid of a storage tank was reportedly thrown into the air, illustrating the power of the explosion.
According to available information, this is the second strike targeting the same refinery in three days, suggesting a targeted Ukrainian campaign against energy infrastructure located deep inside Russian territory. Kyiv did not immediately comment on the attack but has regularly claimed responsibility for similar operations targeting strategic Russian sites.
This strike comes amid an escalation of long-range drone attacks by Ukraine, aimed at disrupting Russia's logistical and economic capabilities. Oil refineries have become recurring targets due to their importance in financing the Russian war effort.
For Kyiv, these operations also have a strong symbolic dimension, showing that the war is no longer limited to the front lines in Ukraine, but can now affect sensitive areas in the heart of Russia.
Moscow, for its part, regularly downplays the impact of these attacks and maintains that its air defense systems intercept the majority of drones. Russian authorities have not provided details on the extent of the damage or the potential consequences for production at the affected site.
