A computer scientist will stand trial in July before the Paris criminal court for the widespread distribution of AI-generated pornographic content featuring public figures. The man is suspected of creating and sharing thousands of sexual deepfakes based on images of celebrities, politicians, journalists, and influencers.
The investigation was launched following several reports concerning the distribution of this content on various online platforms. The investigations identified a significant number of manipulated images created using artificial intelligence tools capable of superimposing the faces of real people onto sexually explicit videos.
A case emblematic of the excesses of AI
Pornographic deepfakes are a major concern for authorities in the face of the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence technologies. This content can seriously damage the reputation, privacy, and image of the individuals targeted, often without their consent or knowledge.
According to investigators, the potential victims number in the thousands. Several prominent figures have already filed complaints or joined the proceedings as civil parties in this case, which is among the most significant of its kind examined by the French justice system.
The trial is also expected to reignite the debate on the legal framework for content generated by artificial intelligence. Faced with the proliferation of deepfakes, European and French public authorities are seeking to strengthen measures to combat the malicious use of these technologies while preserving the legitimate uses of AI.
