Sweden, Norway, and Canada are expected to announce a new military aid program for Ukraine aimed at financing the acquisition of American weapons. The announcement was made Thursday in Brussels by the Swedish Defense Minister, as Kyiv's allies seek to maintain their support in the face of the ongoing war with Russia.
This new initiative falls under the "Ukraine's Priority Needs List" (PURL), a coordinated effort to address the most urgent needs of the Ukrainian armed forces. The program will notably fund the purchase and delivery of military equipment manufactured in the United States.
Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson indicated that the three countries will participate jointly in this effort. According to the Swedish Ministry of Defense, Stockholm's contribution will amount to approximately $108 million.
This announcement comes as Ukraine continues to call for more military aid from its Western partners. Kyiv believes it needs additional resources to strengthen its air defenses, long-range artillery, and strike capabilities against Russian forces.
Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, Sweden, Norway, and Canada have been among Ukraine's regular supporters. The three countries have already provided significant military, financial, and humanitarian aid and continue to participate in initiatives coordinated by Western allies.
The Brussels meeting also falls within the framework of efforts by members of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine, often called the Ramstein Group, which brings together more than fifty countries committed to supporting Kyiv. The partners are seeking to coordinate their contributions in order to respond more effectively to needs on the ground.
As fighting continues on several fronts, this new initiative demonstrates the willingness of Western allies to maintain their military support for Ukraine and to guarantee the supply of Ukrainian forces with equipment deemed essential for the months to come.
