Rockstar Games has finally shown Grand Theft Auto VI like never before. On Thursday evening, the studio released a nearly 27-minute presentation on Netflix entirely dedicated to its upcoming blockbuster. This first official and extended look into GTA VI gameplay features Jason Duvall and Lucia Caminos at the heart of the story, showcasing shootouts, drug trafficking, heists, police chases, and a multitude of activities in Vice City and the fictional state of Leonida. Most importantly, Rockstar confirmed that the footage shown was captured directly from the game on PlayStation 5.
A drug deal that turns into a shootout
The presentation immediately sets the tone. Jason and Lucia are involved in a drug deal when a police intervention turns the operation upside down. The situation escalates into a shootout, and the couple must fight their way through the police. However, Rockstar doesn't just string together spectacular scenes: these opening minutes also demonstrate the movement, the gunfights, and how the two characters work together. The video then alternates between narrative scenes and actual gameplay. Jason and Lucia also appear in their everyday lives, at home, in the car, or during much quieter moments. Their relationship clearly plays a significant role in the adventure, far from being a simple system for switching between two protagonists.
Jason and Lucia, two playable and complementary characters
Just as GTA V allowed players to switch between Michael, Franklin, or Trevor, GTA VI lets players switch between Jason and Lucia. The presentation notably shows Lucia driving while Jason fires at their pursuers from the back of a vehicle. At other times, each character moves separately before the player switches. Rockstar also further develops the two protagonists' personal lives. They talk, get ready before going out, argue, and joke together. This aspect complements their criminal activities and is intended to allow players to follow the evolution of their relationship throughout the story.
Vice City unveils the extent of its activities
The 27-minute preview provides a much clearer picture of the game world. Vice City and Leonida offer dense urban environments, as well as beaches, swampy areas, and much wilder landscapes. Numerous activities are showcased: diving, boating, hovercrafting in the swamps, sports, a shooting range, nightlife, strip clubs, driving various vehicles, and exploring the many shops. Small boats also allow for travel on the water. Rockstar also highlights a large number of non-player characters and numerous interactions with the environment. The studio also emphasizes the behavior of the inhabitants. Drawing a weapon, provoking someone, or committing a crime can alter their reactions. The environment is thus more responsive to the player's actions than in previous installments.
Heists, stolen cars and chases: GTA remains GTA
The series' core elements are still very much present. Several heists appear during the presentation, as do car thefts, shootouts, and chases. The player can choose different ways to approach certain situations and take measures to complicate the police investigation after a crime. Law enforcement has new tools at its disposal to find Jason and Lucia. They can, in particular, retain information about the vehicle used or the suspects' appearance. Changing cars or clothes can then help throw investigators off the scent. Another notable return: the wanted level can once again reach six stars , compared to five in GTA V. The level of police response increases as the crimes committed become more serious.
An open world directly inspired by Florida
Leonida is Rockstar's fictional version of Florida. Vice City is its heart, but the presentation confirms that the adventure will extend far beyond the metropolis. Swamps, islands, back roads, and coastal areas all play a significant role. Rockstar drew on real Florida locations and interviews with residents to build this environment. The satire of American society, characteristic of the franchise, remains ever-present through the advertisements, businesses, characters encountered, and fictional social networks featured in the game.
A presentation entirely captured on PlayStation 5
An important point regarding the graphical quality shown: Rockstar specifies that the presentation consists of images captured directly from GTA VI on PlayStation 5. It is therefore not simply pre-rendered cinematics created specifically for the game's promotion. The demonstration allows for a more detailed look at character animations, Vice City's nighttime lighting, traffic, population density, interiors, and vegetation. Physical animations and interactions have also been significantly improved compared to GTA V.
Rockstar regains control after the major leaks
This official presentation comes after a particularly difficult period for Rockstar. Several sequences of GTA VI had leaked illegally online a few days before the Netflix event. Some of these showed Jason driving, combat, and various activities. Rockstar confirmed the authenticity of these images while reminding everyone that they came from development versions and did not necessarily represent the final product. The studio maintained its August 27th presentation despite these leaks. This time, players have access to officially selected and approved images from the PlayStation 5 version of the game.
A historic first on Netflix
The distribution method is also unusual. Rockstar chose Netflix to provide the world premiere of this lengthy presentation, available from 21 p.m. in France on August 27. This six-hour exclusive was followed by the release of the video for free on Rockstar's official channels during the night of August 27-28. This collaboration extends the existing ties between the two companies, as Netflix has previously offered several older Grand Theft Auto titles on mobile devices.
GTA VI will be released on November 19, 2026
Rockstar has finally confirmed the release date eagerly awaited by millions of players: Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S . No PC version has been announced for launch. After years of anticipation, trailers, and several waves of leaks, this nearly 27-minute presentation is primarily the first truly official demonstration of the experience Rockstar is preparing for the return to Vice City.
