In an interview with the Russian channel Vesti, Vladimir Putin brandished the threat of strikes against Ukraine's "most vulnerable" economic sectors, while describing the peace proposals circulating as "strange" and "unacceptable."
The Russian president chose national television to toughen his stance. Interviewed by the Vesti channel, Vladimir Putin accused Kyiv of opening "Pandora's box" by targeting the Russian economy, implying that Moscow reserves the right to retaliate by targeting the Ukrainian economic sectors it considers "most vulnerable".
On the diplomatic front, Putin has been no less harsh with his interlocutors. The peace proposals currently on the table have been summarily dismissed, the Kremlin leader deeming them both "strange" and "unacceptable," without specifying which ones he was referring to or what criteria he is setting for any potential negotiations.
This statement comes as calls for a ceasefire multiply on the international stage. Moscow's categorical refusal to engage in any discussions on these terms currently closes the door to any prospect of a negotiated settlement in the short term.
