The National Rally's proposal to ban the wearing of the Islamic veil in public spaces and to fine offenders has provoked a strong reaction from the left. Jean-Luc Mélenchon denounced the measure as "despicable," while Green Party MP Benjamin Lucas called it "Islamophobic."
The leader of La France Insoumise accuses Marine Le Pen of wanting to "send in the police to fine women who wear the veil." According to him, the National Rally (RN) is thus demonstrating "that it hasn't changed" and continues to defend "sexist and Islamophobic obsessions" intended, he asserts, to "divide our people and fracture the Republic."
"Secularism is a law of freedom."
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, on the contrary, defends the freedom to wear religious symbols in public spaces. "The veil, the kippah, crucifixes are free choices in public spaces," he asserts, presenting secularism as "a law of freedom and unity of the people."
Benjamin Lucas, a Green Party MP, also denounced the measure as "Islamophobic." These reactions come after statements by Jean-Philippe Tanguy, who confirmed that the National Rally (RN) wanted to impose fines for wearing the veil if Marine Le Pen won the presidential election.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon finally promised that, should his party win in 2027, the priority for law enforcement would be to "do their duty: arrest criminals," rather than "police clothing and beliefs." The issue of the veil is thus already emerging as one of the most explosive topics of the presidential campaign.
