Presidential election 2027: Édouard Philippe wants to engage in a "showdown" with Algeria

Édouard Philippe is taking a firm stance towards Algeria. Appearing on BFMTV, the Horizons candidate for the 2027 presidential election stated that he was "personally in favor of denouncing the 1968 agreement" between Paris and Algiers and called for a show of force that, according to him, could be brought to the European level.

The former Prime Minister believes that a "showdown" with the Algerian authorities may become necessary. "It will not necessarily be a French confrontation, but a European one," he explained, thus advocating for a coordinated response with France's partners.

The 1968 agreement directly targeted

Signed between France and Algeria, the 1968 agreement establishes specific rules regarding the movement, residence, and employment of Algerian nationals in France. Édouard Philippe now intends to directly challenge this agreement, amidst ongoing and significant tensions between Paris and Algiers.

This stance confirms the hardening of the Horizons candidate's position on migration and diplomatic issues. Having already called for a significant reduction in immigration to Mayotte, Édouard Philippe is thus seeking to impose a firm line in the presidential campaign, with Algeria as a new arena for political confrontation.
