Red Sea alert: cargo ship attacked off the coast of Yemen, authorities launch investigation

A cargo ship was attacked on Sunday off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO). The incident occurred in an area of strategic importance for international maritime trade, where security tensions remain high.

According to UKMTO, the agency received a report of an incident that occurred approximately 30 nautical miles southwest of the port of Al Hudaydah, on the west coast of Yemen.

In a message posted on the social network X, the British organization indicated that a cargo ship had triggered a distress alert, reporting that it was the target of an attack carried out by unidentified armed assailants.

The exact circumstances of the attack were not immediately known. The UKMTO stated that the relevant authorities had launched an investigation to determine responsibility and assess the situation.

The agency also called on all ships sailing in the area to exercise the utmost vigilance. The Red Sea, particularly off the coast of Yemen, remains a volatile region where several incidents involving merchant vessels have been recorded in recent months, disrupting the security of one of the world's major trade routes.
