Re-elected as head of the PCF, Fabien Roussel is moving closer to a new candidacy in 2027

Fabien Roussel was overwhelmingly re-elected on Sunday as national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF) at the party congress held in Lille. With 70,1% of the vote, he strengthened his position just weeks before the Communist Party is chosen to lead the 2027 presidential election.

The communist leader welcomed the members' decision to maintain a PCF candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Having already run in 2022, he confirmed his readiness to represent his party once again. Party members will vote on September 6th to officially select their candidate.

Persistent tensions on the left

This strategy continues to draw criticism from within the left. Jean-Luc Mélenchon regretted the prospect of an independent communist candidacy, believing that it risks weakening his camp, as in the 2022 presidential election.

Fabien Roussel rejects this analysis and advocates for a political line independent of the French Communist Party (PCF). According to him, the absence of a communist candidate would encourage abstention rather than unity on the left. He intends to pursue his strategy of winning back the working-class electorate by highlighting his political project and his distinct identity.
