Taiwanese star Shu Qi makes her directorial debut with "Girl," which opens in French theaters this Wednesday, August 5th. This personal story explores two eras and rekindles childhood memories through the coming-of-age narrative of the 1980s. The actress-turned-filmmaker delivers a film that avoids succumbing to melancholy despite its harsh subject matter.

The influence of Hou Hsiao-hsien

The project pays homage to Hou Hsiao-hsien, the great Taiwanese filmmaker who was Shu Qi's mentor. It was he who encouraged her to pick up a camera during the filming of "The Assassin" more than a decade ago. This advice ultimately paid off, as the internationally acclaimed actress has now taken the plunge into directing.

"Girl" blends personal memories and period reconstructions to tell the story of a difficult apprenticeship. The film demonstrates a sensitive approach, informed by Shu Qi's experience in front of the camera and by the lessons of her Taiwanese master.
