Niger has reached a new milestone in its technological development. An electronics assembly plant, capable of producing smartphones, computers, and tablets, is expected to be operational before the end of October. The construction site, located in Hamdallaye in the Tillabéri region, is progressing rapidly. A government delegation led by the Ministers of ICT and Education visited the site on Thursday, August 20, to assess the progress of the work, which is estimated to be 63% complete.
A project addressing the country's digital needs
This infrastructure addresses a major need in a country where access to technology remains limited. According to World Bank data, by 2024, more than eight out of ten adults did not own a smartphone. The factory could gradually change this situation by facilitating access to locally assembled equipment, potentially at more affordable prices.
The commissioning schedule, set before the end of October, demonstrates the Nigerien authorities' commitment to accelerating the deployment of this industrial capacity. The project is part of a digital development strategy aimed at reducing dependence on imports and stimulating the local economy.
