The new production of the musical Singin' in the Rain, directed by Robert Carsen, has revealed its cast ahead of its opening at the Théâtre du Lido on the Champs-Élysées on September 17. Ashley Day will play the lead role of Don Lockwood, alongside Maddie Waller, Charlie Waddell, and Natasha O'Brien.
A new production directed by Robert Carsen
Ten years after a version already noted at the Théâtre du Châtelet, producer Jean-Luc Choplin entrusted this new production to Robert Carsen, who had already directed the show in 2015. The choreographies, inspired by those originally imagined by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen for the film, were entrusted to Rebecca Howell, also choreographer of the show The Man of La Mancha.
Inspired by the 1952 cult film, ranked the fifth best American film of all time by the American Film Institute, the show tells the story of three Hollywood artists in the late 1920s, when silent films gave way to talking pictures and black and white faded into color.
A troupe and a large orchestra to revive the standards
Nacio Herb Brown's original score, with lyrics by Arthur Freed, will be performed by a large live orchestra, featuring timeless classics such as "Singin' in the Rain" and "Good Morning." The book is based on the original by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, which had already been used for previous stage adaptations of the film since their London premiere in 1983.
Having hosted Cabaret, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hello, Dolly! and more recently Les Demoiselles de Rochefort in recent years, the Théâtre du Lido continues its strategy of large musical productions inspired by classic films, on one of the most frequented stages on the Champs-Élysées.
