Brenda Fricker has died at the age of 81. The Irish actress, who won an Oscar for My Left Foot and world-renowned for her role as the Pigeon Lady in Mom, I missed my plane again!She passed away in Dublin after a period of ill health. Her death was announced on Friday, July 17, by her agent, Phil Belfield.  

A disappearance following a period of poor health

The exact nature of Brenda Fricker's illness has not been made public. Her agent confirmed that she died after a period of declining health. "We will never see anyone like her again, and the world is poorer for her absence."Phil Belfield said. He also spoke of an actress deeply loved by the public and a woman who will hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew her.

Born on February 17, 1945 in Dublin, Brenda Fricker began her career in the mid-1960s. Before becoming an actress, she worked in the artistic department of theIrish Times, with the initial ambition of pursuing a career in journalism.

A historic Oscar for My Left Foot

Brenda Fricker's career took on an international dimension in 1989 with My Left Foot, directed by Jim Sheridan. She plays Bridget Fagan Brown, the mother of Christy Brown, an Irish artist and writer with cerebral palsy, portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis. Her performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the ceremony held on March 26, 1990. She thus became the first Irish actress to receive an acting Oscar. Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for Best Actor that same evening for the film. This success also marked a turning point for Irish cinema. Brenda Fricker started acting at 19. She notably appeared in Of Human Bondage in 1964, before taking on numerous roles on stage and television in Ireland and the United Kingdom. She became a familiar face on British television thanks to the medical drama. Casualtyin which she played Megan Roach from 1986. She reprised this role several times until 2010. After her Oscar win, she appeared in numerous Irish, British, and American productions. Dublin had decided to pay tribute to him

In February 2026, the city of Dublin approved the awarding of honorary citizenship to Brenda Fricker, the highest civilian distinction bestowed by the Irish municipality. This recognition was intended to celebrate her more than 60-year career, her role in the development of Irish cinema, and the international impact of her work. Her name was to join those of figures such as Nelson Mandela, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Barack and Michelle Obama, and the members of U2.
