British singer Boy George will not be taking to the stage at the London Palladium in early August for several performances of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, his manager announced on Thursday, July 30, four days after the release of a controversial song in support of Israel.
A title inspired by a visit to an exhibition on the Nova massacre
The former Culture Club singer released a reggae track titled "We Will Dance Again" on X on Sunday, July 26th. The song incorporates the slogan "Od Nirkod" used by survivors of the Nova festival, the site of the largest massacre perpetrated by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel. The song, whose lyrics state "You say genocide, I say war; when you're attacked, that's what the army is for," also criticizes other artists who, according to the lyrics, condemn Jews with selective memory.
The 65-year-old artist explained on Threads that he composed this track, written with the help of artificial intelligence, after visiting an exhibition dedicated to the Nova festival massacre, while acknowledging that many might disagree with his point of view.
A manager forced to make a decision in the face of controversy
Faced with the scale of the controversy, his manager Paul Kemsley announced on Instagram that, after careful consideration, he had decided that Boy George would no longer perform in Jesus Christ Superstar, where he was scheduled to play King Herod from August 3rd to 15th. He stated that he had made this decision in the best interest of his artist, while also apologizing to ticket holders.
Boy George did not directly comment on his withdrawal from the show, but reacted to the controversy over X, writing that he was even falling out with Jewish friends and denouncing a madness that knows no bounds.
