Lyhanna case: Mathilde Panot calls for Gérald Darmanin's resignation

The leader of the La France Insoumise group in the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot, called on Sunday for the resignation of Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin following the death of young Lyhanna. Appearing on LCI, the MP questioned the political responsibility of the Keeper of the Seals, arguing that this tragedy reveals deep-seated failings within the judicial system.

Mathilde Panot denounced what she called the "impoverishment of the justice system," accusing successive governments of having reduced the resources allocated to the courts and child protection services. According to her, the lack of human and material resources weakens the institutions' ability to prevent certain dangerous situations, even those reported early on.

A political responsibility that has been singled out

On Friday, Gérald Darmanin apologized "on behalf of Justice" after the discovery of the schoolgirl's body in the Gers region. The minister acknowledged that the judicial system had failed to protect the teenager and announced that possible sanctions could be considered if professional misconduct or negligence were established.

For Mathilde Panot, however, the issue goes beyond individual responsibility. The MP believes that this tragedy highlights structural dysfunctions affecting child protection and the functioning of the justice system. She considers that a simple change of administrative officials would not be enough to address the problems raised by this case.

A debate on the means of justice

The left-wing politician also asserted that repeated warnings from justice and child protection professionals had not been sufficiently heeded by public authorities. According to her, Lyhanna's death illustrates a broader problem concerning the care of vulnerable minors.

A silent march is to be held this Sunday in Fleurance in tribute to the young girl. While the investigation continues to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy, this case reignites the debate on the resources allocated to the justice system, child protection, and measures designed to prevent violence against minors.
