The government will present a bill to the Council of Ministers on July 1st aimed at strengthening the fight against racism and antisemitism. This announcement was made by Aurore Bergé, Minister Delegate for the Fight Against Discrimination, who stated that the text will send a crucial message to the Republic. The new measure comes after the withdrawal of the bill introduced by Macronist MP Caroline Yadan, which had sparked strong protests.

An expanded system after the Yadan failure

This bill will retain several provisions of the initial text while broadening its scope. In particular, it aims to strengthen penalties for hate speech and expand the definition of Holocaust denial. At the end of April, the minister consulted with representatives of parliamentary groups and advisory bodies such as the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights and the Defender of Rights to develop this new legislation.

A sign of republican unity

In an article published in La Tribune Dimanche, Aurore Bergé defends a bill that she believes will send a message of unity. The minister hopes this bill will provide a firm response to racist and anti-Semitic acts, while avoiding the pitfalls that led to the rejection of the previous proposal. The bill must now pass the Council of Ministers before being submitted to Parliament.
