With the Senate elections just months away in September, Gérard Larcher has clearly stated his intention to continue his work as President of the Senate. The Republican senator from Yvelines, who has served as President of the upper house since 2014, has indicated his hope to secure the confidence of his colleagues for another three-year term in the internal election scheduled for October.
In an interview with La Tribune Dimanche, Gérard Larcher nevertheless emphasized that he did not wish to anticipate the election. However, with the right-wing and centrist majority in the Senate, he appears to be the clear favorite to retain the presidency of the institution. This prospect already allows him to focus on the major political events to come, notably the preparation of the 2027 budget and the presidential election.

On the economic front, Gérard Larcher announced that the right wing would submit a series of budget proposals to the Prime Minister by the end of June. The stated objective is to contribute to the debate on restoring public finances, given that the issue of the deficit and debt is central to political discussions.
The President of the Senate believes that a significant effort will need to be made regarding public spending. He points out that French debt has increased sharply during the two presidential terms of...Emmanuel Macron and deems it necessary to quickly define budgetary guidelines capable of restoring the state's financial flexibility. These proposals should constitute one of the right wing's main contributions to the economic debate in the coming months.
A call for unity for the 2027 presidential election
Gérard Larcher also spoke about the preparations for the presidential election. While he expressed his support for Bruno Retailleau, whom he considers one of the main representatives of the republican right, he believes that the center and right cannot afford to be divided in the face of the National Rally and La France Insoumise.
According to him, the proliferation of candidates from the same political camp would significantly weaken their chances of reaching the second round. He therefore calls for the implementation of a mechanism to designate a single candidate before the end of the year. This position directly targets the already declared ambitions of Bruno Retailleau, Gabriel Attal, and Édouard Philippe.
An arbiter role in the political realignment
Without announcing any specific steps, Gérard Larcher stated that he would take responsibility if no agreement emerged in the coming months. This statement suggests that he could play a mediating or organizing role in finding a compromise between the various factions of the right and center.
With just over a year to go before the presidential election, the President of the Senate intends to exert influence on both budgetary debates and the reshaping of the political landscape. This influence could be further strengthened if he secures, as expected, another term as head of the upper house of Parliament this coming autumn.
