Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Vladimir Putin missed an opportunity to extricate himself from what he called a "failed war," after the Russian president refused to engage in direct talks with Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a post on the social network X, the Ukrainian foreign minister argued that Russia's situation would only worsen if the conflict continued. According to him, military losses are mounting while the Russian economy is gradually sinking into recession.
He also mentioned a deteriorating social and economic situation in Russia, citing rising taxes, inflation, and increasing pressure on the most vulnerable households. He added that international sanctions will continue to intensify, further reducing Moscow's room for maneuver.
These statements come after another tense diplomatic episode between Kyiv and Moscow. In a recently published open letter, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed direct negotiations with Vladimir Putin, accompanied by a temporary truce for the duration of the discussions.
The Russian president, however, rejected this initiative, stating that he saw no point in a direct meeting, believing that previous exchanges had not led to any concrete progress.
In response, the Ukrainian president accused Moscow of not genuinely seeking to end the war and argued that the Russian response reinforced international doubts about the Kremlin's willingness to reach a diplomatic settlement.
As fighting continues on multiple fronts, the positions of the two countries appear to remain deeply opposed, making any prospect of immediate negotiation particularly uncertain.
