The Palestinian Authority is demanding prosecutions following the death of a seven-month-old baby in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Authority has called on the international community to take action to ensure that those responsible for the death of seven-month-old Palestinian infant Sam Fahd Abu Heikal are held accountable for their actions after a shooting near Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

In a statement, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incident as a "summary execution" and considered it part of a pattern of attacks targeting Palestinian civilians, particularly children. The Palestinian authorities consider this event a violation of international humanitarian law.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the baby was fatally wounded when Israeli soldiers opened fire on his family's vehicle in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron. His parents were also injured and hospitalized.

The Palestinian authorities have called on the United Nations and relevant international courts to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy and to take measures to bring those responsible to justice. They have also called for strengthened international protection for Palestinian civilians.

The Israeli army acknowledged in a statement that the vehicle had been targeted by gunfire. However, the exact circumstances of the incident remain controversial and are the subject of conflicting accounts between the parties involved.

The infant's funeral took place on Saturday in Hebron, attended by many residents. The child's body, wrapped in a white shroud and a Palestinian flag, was carried by relatives during the funeral procession.

The case comes amid heightened tensions in the West Bank, where Israeli military operations, arrests and clashes continue alongside the war in the Gaza Strip.

According to figures released by the Palestinian Authority, more than a thousand Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 2023, while thousands more have been wounded, arrested, or displaced. These figures cannot be independently verified at present and are disputed by the Israeli authorities on certain points.

Palestinian officials say they will continue their diplomatic and legal efforts with international bodies to ensure that alleged perpetrators of violations of international law do not enjoy impunity.
