One or more powerful explosions rocked Kabul on Thursday evening, according to eyewitnesses and Taliban authorities, who indicated that an investigation was underway to determine the cause.
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed in a statement that "an explosion was heard in Kabul," but no casualties or damage had yet been reported. "The authorities are assessing the situation," he added.
Witnesses on the scene, including a Reuters journalist , reported hearing at least two explosions around 21:50 p.m. local time (17:20 p.m. GMT) in different parts of the Afghan capital.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosions. Taliban security forces have sealed off several areas of the city, while the population remains on high alert after a series of attacks in recent months, often attributed to the local branch of the Islamic State (IS-K).
The incident comes amid persistent tension in Afghanistan, where Taliban authorities are trying to maintain stability in the face of a resurgence of attacks targeting religious institutions, embassies and public infrastructure.
