The far right makes gains in the parliamentary elections in Cyprus

The far right and several new political movements made significant gains in the parliamentary elections held Sunday in Cyprus, according to official results, in a vote that could reshape the country's political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The far-right ELAM party, considered close to the former Greek Golden Dawn movement, obtained approximately 11% of the vote, compared to 6,8% in the previous parliamentary elections in 2021. This increase allows it to become the third largest political force in the Cypriot Parliament.

The two main traditional parties nevertheless retain the lead: the right-wing DISY party received 27,2% of the votes, while the communist AKEL party obtained 23,8%.

The election also marks a breakthrough for new anti-corruption movements and figures from social media. The new ALMA party, in particular, will enter Parliament with a platform focused on fighting corruption and renewing the political class.

The centrist parties supporting President Nikos Christodoulides, on the other hand, suffered a significant setback. The Diko, Dipa, and EDEK parties lost ground, while EDEK and Dipa failed to even reach the threshold required to enter Parliament.

Even though the Cypriot political system grants most of the executive power to the president, these results could complicate the task of Christodoulides, elected as an independent in 2023, and force him to seek new alliances for the 2028 presidential election.

More than half a million voters were called to the polls to elect the 56 members of the Cypriot Parliament.
