The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that more than 900 suspected cases of Ebola, including 101 confirmed cases, had been identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising serious concerns about the progression of the epidemic.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus indicated that health authorities were continuing surveillance and response efforts to contain the spread of the virus in several areas of the country.
This new outbreak comes as the DRC regularly faces Ebola epidemics due to the fragility of its health system and difficulties of access in some regions affected by armed conflict.
The WHO and its international partners are working with Congolese authorities to accelerate testing, isolation of cases and vaccination of at-risk individuals in order to prevent a worsening of the health crisis.
Health officials have not yet specified the exact number of deaths linked to this epidemic or the provinces most severely affected.
