Twenty-five years after its creation, Wikipedia finds itself at a crossroads. The Wikimania 2026 conference, the annual gathering of contributors and advocates for the largest online collaborative encyclopedia, is taking place this week in Paris. The anniversary could have been merely a celebration. It is also an opportunity for a concerned assessment.
The question that runs through the debates is that of the survival of a model. The rise of artificial intelligence is shaking the very foundations of the project: if automated systems can generate encyclopedic texts in a few seconds, what role remains for the thousands of volunteers who have been writing, correcting and verifying articles for a quarter of a century?
The issues raised by AI are not limited to competition. They also concern reliability: automatically generated content can populate the encyclopedia, introducing errors or biases that are difficult for already overburdened human moderators to detect.
