Ligue 1 kicked off on Friday night, and Olympique de Marseille made a strong statement. At the Vélodrome, OM crushed Strasbourg 4-0 to launch the 2026-2027 season. This first demonstration of dominance puts Marseille provisionally at the top of the league. But behind this perfect start lies the real question for this new season. Not who can dethrone PSG, as the Parisian club currently seems out of reach of its French rivals, but rather who will manage to get closest to the champions. Because despite Marseille's 4-0 victory, the gap remains enormous: over a full season, no one in Ligue 1 currently seems to possess the necessary tools to truly challenge Parisian dominance. Paris has dominated French football for years and has recently reached a new level by winning the Champions League two seasons in a row.
Marseille begins with a demonstration
In Bruno Genesio's first Ligue 1 match in charge of Marseille, OM waited until the second half to dismantle Strasbourg. After a 0-0 first half, Amine Gouiri broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Strasbourg were then reduced to ten men following Samir El-Mourabet's dismissal in the 59th minute. Gouiri doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, completing his brace. Keyliane Abdallah added a third goal late in the game before Pierre-Emile Højbjerg sealed the victory in stoppage time. Final score: 4-0. Three points, no goals conceded, and a goal difference of +4. Marseille could hardly have asked for a better start to their league campaign.
Lens expected as early as this Saturday
After Marseille's resounding victory, Lens takes to the pitch this Saturday at 17:15 PM against Auxerre at Bollaert. Lens arrives brimming with confidence after their win against PSG in the Trophée des Champions. This victory serves as a reminder that Paris is certainly not invincible in a single match. At 20:45 PM, Lyon will kick off their season in Toulouse. Meanwhile, Nice will host Lorient, Troyes will welcome Paris FC, and Le Mans will face Brest.
Lille and Monaco take to the pitch on Sunday
The first matchday continues on Sunday with Angers vs. Lille at 17 p.m. LOSC, runners-up in last season's championship, are naturally among the clubs expected to be near the top of the table. At 15:15 p.m., Monaco will travel to Le Havre. There too, Monaco will be aiming to reclaim the top spots and establish themselves immediately among the leading pack. Then comes the final match of the weekend, and undoubtedly the most anticipated when it comes to assessing the league standings.
Rennes-PSG to finish the first day
After winning the UEFA Super Cup for the second consecutive time, PSG will begin their Ligue 1 season on Sunday at 20:45 PM away to Rennes, the match having been reversed due to the state of the pitch at the Parc des Princes. Paris will therefore have the opportunity to immediately respond to Marseille's 4-0 victory. A Parisian win would obviously not decide anything after just one matchday. But it would serve as a reminder of the reality that all other French clubs must contend with: to hope to capitalize on a PSG slip-up, they must be able to win almost every week.
PSG plays in a different league
Paris Saint-Germain enters this Ligue 1 season in an almost paradoxical situation. Their main domestic challenge is no longer simply to finish ahead of Marseille, Monaco, Lille, or Lens. It lies in maintaining sufficient focus throughout the entire season while their ambitions lie at the pinnacle of European football. PSG boasts a squad virtually unrivaled in France. The other major French clubs can occasionally beat PSG. Marseille has already done so. Monaco can do it. Lille too. Lens even recently defeated PSG in the Trophée des Champions. But beating PSG for 90 minutes and finishing ahead of PSG after 34 matchdays are two entirely different things. This is precisely where the gap lies. PSG dominates French, European, and world football, following their two back-to-back Champions League and UEFA Super Cup titles, as well as the Intercontinental Cup. The national title already seems destined for PSG. Behind PSG, however, no one has any certainty whatsoever.
