Nearly 120,000 students returned to school this Monday in Mayotte. This back-to-school period comes twenty months after Cyclone Chido, which destroyed or damaged approximately 40% of the archipelago's schools in December 2024.
Significant renovations have been carried out, but several schools remain partially dilapidated. Some classrooms are still open to the outside, and some ceilings have not been fully rebuilt. As a result, learning conditions remain precarious for some students and teachers.
Work is still unfinished in several establishments
Speaking from the Magnélé elementary school in Mamoudzou, Prefect Frédéric Poisot acknowledged that the reconstruction was not yet complete. He nevertheless emphasized the priority given to getting children back to school despite the ongoing logistical challenges.
The start of the new school year marks an important step in the recovery of the Mayotte education system, but it does not signify a complete return to normal. Authorities must now accelerate construction projects to ensure that the 120,000 students have safe and suitable facilities in a territory where schools were already under considerable strain before the cyclone.
