LCI is enjoying a historic August. In a statement to its viewers, the TF1 group channel claims, for the first time since its creation, the title of France's leading news channel . This assertion is endorsed by management, which highlights its growing audience figures, its news coverage, and the success of the first major debate for the 2027 presidential election, broadcast on August 27.

Behind this triumphant announcement, however, lies an extremely close battle for audience share. For the month as a whole, LCI and BFMTV both garnered a 2,8% audience share after rounding. Specifically, BFMTV maintains a slight advantage, with 2,815%, compared to 2,807% for LCI. Based on the rankings published to the nearest tenth of a point, the two channels therefore finish tied for first place.

"For the first time since its creation, LCI has ranked as the number one news channel in France."

The message sent by TF1 Info leaves no ambiguity about how LCI intends to present its results. "This August, we wrote a page in our history. For the first time since its creation, LCI ranked as the number one news channel in France ," the channel wrote.

This performance marks a significant milestone in the battle between news channels, a battle that has evolved considerably in recent years. In October 2025, CNews achieved its all-time high with a 4% audience share, claiming the top spot . A few months later, the balance of power is noticeably different: in August 2026, LCI and BFMTV reach 2,8%, ahead of CNews at 2,5% and franceinfo at 1,1%.

LCI's progress is particularly clear over a year: the channel gained 0,5 points of audience share, while CNews lost 0,7. LCI also achieved its second best month in its history, after the 3,2% recorded in March 2026.

241,000 viewers on average between noon and midnight

In its press release, LCI also emphasizes another statistic: "On average, 241,000 viewers trust us, watch us and listen to us every day."

This figure corresponds more precisely to the average audience recorded by LCI between noon and midnight , a time slot during which it effectively leads the news channels with 241,000 viewers and a 2,6% audience share. Furthermore, during the month, LCI ranked as the top news channel every other day.

The channel directly attributes these results to its editorial choices: "This result is the work of an entire newsroom. Journalists, technicians, production teams, and presenters who, every day, tirelessly, choose rigor and high standards. It is the result of a consistent editorial line, verified information, and journalism that takes the time to explain."

This discourse accompanies a rise in power that has been underway for several months. LCI has notably recruited several figures from BFMTV, including Guillaume Farde and Nicolas Doze, in a context of numerous departures and reorganization within BFMTV.

The presidential debate on August 27th gave LCI a record-breaking day

LCI is focusing particularly on the event that marked its August: the first major debate of the 2027 presidential election, organized by the Medef at Roland-Garros and presented by Amélie Carrouër on August 27.

The meeting brought together, among others, Marine Le Pen, Gabriel Attal, Jean-Luc Mélenchon , Édouard Philippe, Raphaël Glucksmann, Bruno Retailleau , and Marine Tondelier. Between 4:45 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., 1,03 million viewers tuned in to the debate, representing an 11% audience share. For the entire day, LCI achieved a 4,9% audience share, its highest ever.

The event had also given rise to an unusual battle between channels. BFMTV had to interrupt its broadcast of the debate due to the exclusivity agreement concluded with LCI.

LCI logically places this event at the heart of its review: "A historic August in which the channel gathered more than 1 million viewers for the first major presidential debate presented by Amélie Carrouër on August 27."

"Your loyalty is the greatest recognition."

In its message, LCI finally attributes part of this growth to its viewers and the TF1 Info digital ecosystem: "And more than 26 million of you follow TF1 Info and LCI on social media, understanding and experiencing the news with us every day."

The channel continues: "Your loyalty is the greatest recognition, and the most demanding responsibility. It compels us to do better, again and again."

LCI is now looking ahead to a season that will be largely dominated by the 2027 presidential election: "The start of the new season promises to be rich, intense and decisive. We will be there, ready to cover the news, with the same ambition and the same commitment."

The press release simply ends with "Thank you for watching ." After having long lagged behind BFMTV and then CNews, LCI thus enters the fall of 2026 in a position it has never before experienced: at the top of the monthly ranking of news channels, at least tied, and now directly engaged in the battle to establish itself permanently in first place.
