2027 Presidential Election: The National Rally wants to punish the wearing of the veil with a fine

The National Rally confirms its intention to ban the wearing of the Islamic veil in public spaces if it wins in 2027. Invited on BFMTV, Jean-Philippe Tanguy assured that offenders would be punished with a fine, comparing the measure to that applied for not wearing a seatbelt.

“We will obviously fight Islamist ideology and we will sanction the wearing of the veil,” declared the National Rally MP for the Somme. According to him, this measure should also be understood as a gesture of “solidarity” with women forced to wear the veil in certain countries. The ban was already included in Marine Le Pen ’s previous presidential platforms.

"It's been decided."

While questions had arisen about Jordan Bardella's supposed reservations regarding the practical implementation of this measure, Jean-Philippe Tanguy assures that the internal debate is now closed. "It's been decided," he affirms, specifying that "the ban on headscarves" will indeed be part of the program.

The MP also explained that his own views on the issue have evolved. Referring to his childhood in the Parisian suburbs, he believes that the veil has since become widespread and now sees it as "evidence of an ideology that is incompatible with women's freedom in France."

In concrete terms, the National Rally is therefore planning a financial penalty. "If there are women who wear the veil when it is forbidden, they will be fined," explained Jean-Philippe Tanguy, drawing a comparison with motorists who are penalized when they do not wear their seat belts.

On the left, the proposal is already provoking strong reactions. David Guiraud, the LFI mayor of Roubaix, denounced on X a project he describes as "Islamophobic", illustrating once again how important the issue of the veil should be in the presidential campaign.
