Maud Bregeon has clearly settled the debate between Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal. Appearing on BFMTV-RMC this Monday, the government spokesperson, who joined the Horizons candidate at the end of June, believes that the former Prime Minister is now the only candidate from the center-right capable of reaching the second round of the presidential election.
“There’s no contest,” she asserted, judging that Édouard Philippe is currently “the only one who can qualify for the second round.” This was a particularly aggressive statement given that Gabriel Attal is maintaining his own candidacy and also refuses to withdraw.
"The primary period is over."
Maud Bregeon also ruled out the idea of a primary for the right and center, a proposal regularly raised by several political leaders. "The time for primaries is over," she declared, believing that the balance of power is now clear enough to avoid further internal competition.
The government spokesperson also spoke about the situation in the Middle East, calling for "calm" and the "peaceful reopening" of the Strait of Hormuz after the American strikes and the Iranian response.
Regarding purchasing power, she finally announced that the government wished to "continue sector-specific aid" for fuel purchases, particularly for the most vulnerable businesses. "We are not going to close the gates, we are not going to close the counters," she assured.
