An Israeli missile killed at least eight Palestinians, mostly children, in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday as they tried to collect water, local officials reported. According to the Israeli military, the missile veered off course due to a technical malfunction and missed its initial target.
The tragedy occurred in an area where many civilians gather daily to access water, which has become an extremely scarce resource after months of conflict. According to local authorities, the explosion also injured more than a dozen people, some in critical condition. Images relayed by local media show scenes of panic and distress, with bloodied children being rushed to hospitals that were still open.
The Israeli military quickly acknowledged the strike, but insisted it did not target civilians. "A missile was launched as part of a targeted operation against armed elements. We are investigating what appears to be a malfunction that caused a deviation from the trajectory," a military spokesperson said. No evidence of the presence of military targets in the affected area has yet been made public.
This latest dramatic episode comes as negotiations for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza have so far failed to yield any real progress. Since the start of the war in October 2023, more than 58 Palestinians have been killed, according to figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health, while the hostilities continue to cause immense humanitarian suffering, particularly among children, who account for a significant proportion of the victims.
The water and electricity distribution system in the enclave has virtually ground to a halt, and civilians are forced to travel long distances to access water points, often under drone surveillance and in high-risk areas. Humanitarian agencies have been warning for weeks about the dire consequences of this shortage, exacerbated by ongoing fighting and massive infrastructure destruction.
The international community has once again expressed its concern over the scale of civilian casualties. But on the ground, the situation shows no signs of abating. Strikes continue, civilians continue to flee, and promises of a truce are struggling to materialize. For the bereaved families of Gaza, as well as for a population exhausted by months of war, each day brings new tragedies.
