An American citizen who contracted the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been hospitalized in Berlin, where he is receiving specialized care, but his condition is not considered critical, German medical authorities announced.
The patient, repatriated from Central Africa to Germany, is currently being treated at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, in a highly secure isolation unit reserved for serious infectious diseases.
In a statement, the hospital specified that the patient's condition was being closely monitored, even though he was not currently in a serious state. Doctors were nevertheless continuing his treatment under close supervision.
The hospital also indicated that the patient's wife and their four children had tested negative for the Ebola virus, a detail deemed reassuring by health authorities.
The patient contracted the virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an outbreak linked to a rare strain of Ebola has already caused the death of more than 130 people, according to reports.
The arrival of the medical convoy transporting the patient to Berlin was placed under strict health security measures to avoid any risk of spreading the virus, which is known to be extremely contagious through direct contact with bodily fluids.
German health authorities have not reported any immediate risk to the population, while maintaining reinforced protocols around patient care and monitoring of his relatives.
