Royal Caribbean abandons its water park project in Mexico after an environmental rejection

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd has abandoned its "Perfect Day" water park project on Mexico's Caribbean coast after environmental authorities rejected it.

The Mexican government rejected the project due to its perceived significant impact on the fragile Mahahual ecosystem, an area located near protected mangroves and the Mesoamerican Reef, the world's second-largest coral reef. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the project would not be carried out at that site.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the proposed development was too invasive for the region, leading to the denial of the necessary permits. The project had already sparked strong local opposition and criticism from environmental organizations, concerned about the effects of megatourism on marine biodiversity.

Royal Caribbean indicated that it remained open to further discussions with Mexican authorities to consider relocating the project to a less sensitive area.
