Two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, have been charged and placed in pretrial detention following the death of Théo, an 11-year-old boy found strangled on Sunday in Rennes. The prosecutor's office announced they have been charged with "murder of a minor" and "robbery in a group" in this case that has deeply shaken the city.
The child's body was discovered late Sunday afternoon in a wooded area near the Vilaine River, not far from the city center. Alerted by residents who heard cries, police found the victim unconscious with a towel tightly wrapped around his neck. The autopsy confirmed death by strangulation.
A revenge plot linked to fishing equipment
During their police custody, the two teenagers admitted that they wanted to "get revenge" on the child and recover fishing equipment estimated to be worth a few dozen euros, according to public prosecutor Frédéric Teillet. Investigators found Théo's belongings during searches conducted at the homes of the two suspects.
Initial findings of the investigation indicate that the 16-year-old boy had met Théo the day before the incident during a fishing trip. The two youths then arranged to meet again on Sunday to return to the water's edge. The suspects, previously unknown to the police and students at the same school, were seen running from the scene shortly after the incident. The investigation is now continuing under the authority of an investigating judge.
