The EU sanctions six people linked to the death of Alexei Navalny, a toxin implicated

The European Union announced on Friday the imposition of sanctions against six people, mainly scientists and researchers, accused of being involved in the development of a toxin linked to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

According to the EU Council, the sanctioned individuals allegedly participated in work involving substances classified as chemical agents, including epibatidine, which was detected in samples taken from the opposition figure's body after his death. This substance is naturally present in certain poison dart frogs in South America and is not found naturally in Russia.

The European measures include an asset freeze and an entry ban to the EU for those concerned. Brussels justifies these sanctions by their alleged involvement in the development of chemical weapons.

Alexei Navalny, a leading figure in the opposition to the Kremlin, died in circumstances that have sparked significant diplomatic tensions between Russia and Western countries. Several European states accuse Moscow of involvement in his poisoning, an accusation that Russia firmly denies.

Moscow has asked European countries to provide concrete evidence to support these allegations, while denying any responsibility for the death of the opposition figure.

This new series of sanctions is in line with measures taken by the European Union against individuals and entities linked to alleged human rights violations and the use of chemical agents. It comes amid persistent and high tensions between Russia and Western countries.
