Pope Leo XIV on Saturday denounced companies that seek "dizzying" profits at the expense of the environment, during a visit to an Italian region marked by serious pollution linked to illegal dumping of toxic waste.
The Pope visited an area in southern Italy known for years for its illegal industrial waste management activities. This region has become a symbol of the health and environmental consequences of pollution, with many families affected by the alleged effects of this contamination.
During his visit, the Pope met with bishops, members of the clergy, and families of victims. He stated that he wanted to "gather the tears" of those still suffering from the consequences of this pollution, according to reports from the event.
This stance is part of a series of regular messages from the Vatican on environmental issues, continuing calls for better protection of creation and increased responsibility from economic actors in the face of ecological damage.
Pope Leo XIV is also due to publish on Monday his first major document, which will be devoted to artificial intelligence, a text eagerly awaited within the Catholic Church and beyond.
