A violent explosion Friday in a dry dock on Staten Island, New York, left at least one person dead and 36 injured, according to US authorities. The tragedy occurred while firefighters were already on the scene battling a blaze and rescuing trapped workers.
Emergency services were called after reports of a basement fire and two workers trapped inside the shipyard. It was during this operation that the explosion occurred, turning the rescue operation into a disaster scene.
Among the injured are several firefighters. Two of them were hospitalized in serious condition. Authorities indicated that a fire inspector suffered a fractured temple and a brain hemorrhage, requiring intubation. The condition of the second seriously injured firefighter has reportedly improved.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the courage of the first responders who arrived at the scene. "This was a complex and rapidly evolving emergency," he told reporters, adding that the rescuers "ran into danger so that others could get to safety."
Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased victim, stating only that it was a civilian. A thorough investigation will be launched as soon as the fire is completely extinguished to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
The incident occurred in the Richmond Terrace area of Staten Island, one of New York City's five boroughs located across the harbor from Manhattan. The area was largely secured during the emergency response.
This explosion has reignited concerns about safety in the city's industrial and port facilities, as authorities continue to try to understand what caused this spectacular tragedy.
