The Governor of the Bank of Japan leaves the hospital and prepares his return to the helm.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda was released from hospital on Friday after about two weeks of hospitalization, the Japanese central bank announced in a statement.

Kazuo Ueda, 74, had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of a cyst. His condition now appears to be stable enough for him to gradually resume his professional activities.

According to the Bank of Japan, the governor will return to his office next Tuesday. However, he will continue to undergo medical treatment for approximately two more weeks while resuming his duties.

This announcement puts an end to questions about the official's ability to conduct the country's monetary policy in an economic context still marked by challenges related to inflation, growth and the evolution of financial markets.

Kazuo Ueda has headed the Bank of Japan since 2023 and plays a central role in the monetary policy decisions of the world's third-largest economy. His positions are closely watched by investors due to their potential impact on the yen, interest rates, and international markets.

The central bank provided no further details on the exact nature of his treatment, but indicated that the governor would continue his recovery while gradually resuming his responsibilities in Tokyo. His return is seen as a reassuring sign for Japanese markets and economic actors.
