The administrative court of Martinique on Friday annulled the election of the municipal council of Basse-Pointe, resulting from the first round of the municipal elections of March 15, 2026, due to irregularities likely to affect the integrity of the vote.
Following a complaint filed by Kévin Capron, head of the "Synergie Pointoise" list, the court noted two breaches of the electoral code committed during the campaign, according to a press release published on June 19.
The first irregularity concerns the distribution, in the week preceding the vote, of a brochure by the incumbent mayor's list presenting a management report deemed to be an advertising campaign, which is prohibited during an election period. Given its scale, this distribution was considered sufficient to compromise the integrity of the vote.
An irregular display that exacerbates the shortcomings
The second irregularity concerns non-compliant election posters, specifically the circulation within the municipality of a vehicle equipped with a sound system broadcasting campaign messages outside of authorized locations. The court considers this infraction to have aggravated the first, but it is not sufficient on its own to justify the annulment.
Consequently, a new municipal election will have to be held in Basse-Pointe, unless the decision is appealed. However, the appeals concerning the municipalities of Le Prêcheur and Sainte-Anne were rejected. The judges acknowledged some minor irregularities but determined that they were not sufficient to call into question the integrity of the results.
