Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce on Monday the winning bidder for a major contract to build 12 submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy, according to reports in the newspaper. The Globe and Mail.
This announcement will come before Mr. Carney's departure for the NATO summit, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday in Turkey. The Prime Minister's office has not yet officially confirmed this information.
Two candidates are vying for this contract, one of the most important in Canada's military history: the German-Norwegian consortium Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and the South Korean manufacturer Hanwha Ocean.
The program aims to replace the four Victoria-class submarines currently in service, which are considered aging and increasingly difficult to keep operational.
This decision comes as Canada accelerates its defence investments. Ottawa has already met NATO's target of spending 2% of its gross domestic product on military expenditures and has committed to increasing this level to 5% by 2035.
In parallel, the Canadian government plans to present, at the NATO summit, an initiative to create a global bank dedicated to financing defense projects, with about ten founding countries expected.
