Brazil exits the World Cup in the round of 90. Defeated by Norway in New York (1-2), the Seleção's run ends before the quarterfinals for the first time since 1990. After being held at bay for much of the match, the game turned in the final minutes. Erling Haaland scored twice late in the game, in the 79th and 90th minutes, before Neymar pulled one back from the penalty spot in stoppage time, in the 9th minute.
Nyland kicks off the match with a crucial save
Brazil had a major opportunity very early on. In the 12th minute, after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty to the Seleção. Bruno Guimaraes stepped up to take the spot-kick, facing Orjan Nyland, but the Norwegian goalkeeper guessed correctly and saved the Brazilian midfielder's attempt. This turning point kept Norway in the game. The first half then ended goalless, despite a save by Alisson in the 45th+3 minute on a Norwegian attack finished by Odegaard.
Haaland unlocks everything in the 79th minute
Norway finally struck in the 79th minute. On a move down the left flank, Schjelderup beat his defender before sending in a cross to the far post. Haaland rose highest to head home from close range, beating Alisson to open the scoring. This goal put Brazil under immediate pressure. The Seleção, already frustrated by their missed penalty in the first half, now had to chase the game.
The double that stuns Brazil
In the 90th minute, Haaland made it 2-0. Played in by Schjelderup on the edge of the box, the Norwegian striker controlled the ball before unleashing a left-footed shot. His low, angled strike went between Danilo's legs and nestled into the bottom corner of Alisson's net. Norway then took a decisive lead. Brazil didn't immediately concede, but the deficit had become too much to bear.
Neymar reduces the gap, but too late
In stoppage time, Neymar salvaged some pride for Brazil from the penalty spot. In the 99th minute, he opened his foot with the inside of his right foot and sent Nyland the wrong way to pull Brazil back to 2-1. The goal wasn't enough. A few minutes later, the final whistle confirmed Brazil's elimination and Norway's qualification.
Norway enters its history
With this victory, Norway will play in their first-ever World Cup quarter-final. Led by a decisive Nyland and a clinical Haaland in the final minutes, the Scandinavian side knocked out one of the tournament favorites. Brazil, five-time world champions, exit unceremoniously. Norway, however, continues its journey and will play the winner of Mexico-England.
