Norway called on China to play a more active role in facilitating a resumption of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, during a meeting between Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and the Chinese President. Xi Jinping.
During his visit to China, Jonas Gahr Støre stressed that Beijing, because of its influence over Moscow, could help create the conditions necessary for a dialogue aimed at ending the conflict.
The Norwegian Prime Minister indicated that he had discussed the war in Ukraine with Chinese leaders, as well as the international consequences of the conflict, particularly for global security and the economy. He emphasized the importance of respecting international law and the sovereignty of states.
China officially claims to remain neutral in the conflict, while maintaining close relations with Russia. Beijing says it supports efforts toward a political solution and regularly calls for a ceasefire and negotiations, but Western countries believe its influence over Moscow could be further leveraged.
Discussions between Norwegian and Chinese officials also covered bilateral relations, economic cooperation, trade, and issues related to climate and the energy transition.
This visit comes as diplomatic initiatives multiply to try to revive a peace process between Moscow and Kyiv, despite the continuation of fighting on the ground.
