Cuba suffered a widespread power outage on Monday after the complete collapse of its national power grid, leaving nearly 10 million people without electricity.

The state-owned electricity company, UNE, stated that the causes of the outage were still under investigation. Authorities did not provide an estimate of when power would be restored.

This latest blackout comes amid a persistent energy crisis. For several months, Cubans have been facing daily power cuts, sometimes lasting several hours, or even several days in some areas.

The country suffers from an aging electricity grid, a chronic lack of fuel to power its power plants and a severe economic crisis which complicates maintenance and supply operations.

Even before the complete collapse of the grid, much of the island was already experiencing significant electricity restrictions due to insufficient production.

Authorities indicated that technical teams were mobilized to identify the source of the outage and gradually restore the system to service.
