Fires in Southern Italy: Sicily and Puglia affected, mass evacuations underway

Two major forest fires are currently mobilizing emergency services in southern Italy, simultaneously affecting Sicily and the Apulia region. Italian authorities have deployed air and ground resources to try to contain the flames, which have been fanned by adverse weather conditions.

In Sicily, a fire broke out for reasons still unknown in a scrubland area on the Montagna Grande hill, near Trapani, in the west of the island. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the fire spread rapidly over a wide area due to the wind, complicating firefighting efforts.

Firefighters in Trapani have deployed significant resources, including at least three helicopters and two water-bombing aircraft. Teams are continuing their operations by air and ground to prevent the flames from reaching inhabited areas or sensitive sites.

At the same time, a second fire broke out in the town of Ugento, in the Puglia region of southern Italy. Quickly brought under control by firefighters, the blaze nevertheless caused significant disruption and preventative evacuations in the surrounding tourist areas.

As a safety precaution, several campsites and holiday resorts threatened by the flames were evacuated. According to local reports, more than 500 people had to leave the area, including former Italian international footballer Mario Balotelli.

While the Ugento fire is now under control, cooling and monitoring operations continue to prevent any flare-ups. Italian authorities remain on high alert, as the summer season significantly increases the risk of forest fires in several regions of the country.
