Limited but unprecedented reimbursement starting this Monday for leading weight loss medications

Starting June 15th, the anti-obesity medications Wegovy and Mounjaro will be eligible for 65% reimbursement by the French national health insurance. This coverage applies to patients suffering from severe or morbid obesity who meet specific medical criteria, within a strict framework defined by the health authorities.

The initial prescription must be issued by physicians working in facilities specializing in the treatment of obesity. Patients must also have a secure prescription accompanied by a specific document enabling them to claim reimbursement.

A structured system

Both treatments, belonging to the GLP-1 analog family, will only be reimbursed when used in conjunction with a treatment plan that includes reducing calorie intake and increasing physical activity. The government estimates that approximately one million people could theoretically be affected, although the actual number of beneficiaries is expected to remain lower initially.

This approach is already raising questions about how compliance with the associated recommendations will be monitored. The cost to the national health insurance system is estimated at nearly €100 million by 2027, while many patients will still have to pay for their treatment themselves in the immediate future.
