“Racist banditry”: London condemns anti-immigration violence in Northern Ireland

The British government has strongly condemned the violence that has gripped Northern Ireland for several days. The minister responsible for the province, Hilary Benn, described the riots as "racist thuggery," accusing those responsible of deliberately targeting ethnic minorities and foreigners.

Clashes broke out in several areas of Belfast, where police again used water cannons to disperse protesters during a second consecutive night of violence. Authorities said the incidents were less intense than the previous night.

The rioters targeted homes, vehicles, and a hotel housing asylum seekers. Fires were reported, and several residents belonging to ethnic minorities were targeted in the attacks, causing serious concern among the affected communities.

Hilary Benn denounced the hateful acts, which he said had no justification whatsoever. The minister called for a return to calm and expressed his support for the victims of the violence, while also commending the actions of the security forces mobilized to restore order.

Northern Irish police have indicated that much of the unrest appears to have been coordinated via the internet and social media. Investigators are now seeking to identify those involved in organizing or inciting the violence.

These events have reignited tensions surrounding immigration and community coexistence in Northern Ireland. British authorities have vowed to prosecute those responsible and strengthen protection for individuals and targeted sites, while the situation remains under close scrutiny.
