Paris: Sophia Chikirou files a complaint with the prosecutor regarding violence in after-school programs

Sophia Chikirou's group in the Paris City Council announced on Thursday, June 11, that it would be filing a report with the public prosecutor. This action comes after revelations of sexual abuse in Parisian after-school programs. The La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) representative is not directly targeting the acts of abuse themselves, but rather "what surrounded them," as her group clarified in a press release. The Paris MP is questioning the city's "criminal liability" in its handling of these cases.

Commission of inquiry requested

Sophia Chikirou also proposes the creation of a commission of inquiry to "shed full light on the responsibilities of the state and local authorities." The stated objective is to protect children attending extracurricular activities in Paris. This initiative marks a political offensive against the mayor's office, accused of having been slow to react to reports. The issue is becoming a battleground between the various Parisian political forces.

These statements come amid tensions among Parisian elected officials. Rachida Dati and Emmanuel Grégoire had already clashed with Sophia Chikirou on this issue during a televised debate before the second round of municipal elections last March. The mayor of the 7th arrondissement and the first deputy mayor of Paris traded blame for the problems. After-school programs, managed by local authorities, are now the focus of criticism regarding the effectiveness of municipal oversight.
